Yanga-Mbiwa to have Newcastle medical

Monday 21 January 2013

Newcastle are expecting the arrival of Montpellier player Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at St. James’ Park for a medical on Monday, the BBC has reported.

The French defender is expected to complete a £6.7m move if the medical is passed successfully, meaning the 23-year-old will become the second defender Alan Pardew has signed in the January transfer window

Earlier this month, Mathieu Debuchy completed his £5m transfer from Lille as Newcastle look to shore up a defence that has led to their lowly 16th place in the Premier League. Newcastle have won just three 3 of their last 18 league games, and now find themselves only points outside of the relegation zone.

Yanga-Mbiwa started his career with Montpellier in 2007, when the club was still in Ligue 2. He has become a regular member of the side which has made a successful return to Ligue 1 in 2009. He has featured 25 times so far this season, and while his club are struggling in the lower half of the league, Yanga-Mbiwa's form has stood out, leading to him winning the first of his three international caps for the French national team.

Yanga-Mbiwa was earlier linked with a move to Arsenal. However, Pardew will hope that his capture of the Frenchman may help get his team's Premier League survival back on track, with Yanga-Mbiwa possibly making his debut against Aston Villa is just over a week's time.
