Man City coach Platt puts pressure on Man Utd in Premier League race
Manchester City assistant manager David Platt has started the mind games with Manchester United, saying that the Premier League title is "theirs to lose".
The Daily Mirror has reported that after watching United's gap over City cut to five points on the weekend, Platt still believes the advantage lies with the Red Devils, but City are ready to push their rivals right to the end.
Platt said: “It's not over, we can make it up. It's not insurmountable by any stretch of the imagination. But equally, it's theirs to lose. It's very very difficult for us to go on and win the next 15 games on the bounce. But I think we're capable of doing it.”
City beat Fulham 2-0 on Saturday, and then watched as Tottenham scored a dramatic late equaliser against United in Sunday's late game. Whilst the gap of five points is still considerable, City will draw great encouragement from last season, when they overturned an eight point gap with just six games remaining to claim their first title in 44 years.
Platt believes that City are starting to find their form. He said: “I thought we were a bit stop-start at the beginning of the season, but at the beginning of December, we started to play and be more consistent.”
City have won their last four Premier League games, and six of their last seven, which has kept them well and truly in the hunt of United, as well as keeping them six points clear of third placed Chelsea.
The Etihad Stadium club have lost twice this season, one of those against United, and the other against Sunderland at the Stadium Of Light, but Platt believes they were “blips”, as opposed to a weakness in the club.
“Even though we got beaten by United, I thought we performed well. The other blip we've had was at Sunderland, but even that one was a strange game. I think we would win that game nine times out of 10 with the chances we created,” Platt said.
