Man Utd searching for new goalkeeper after De Gea flap at Tottenham

Tuesday 22 January 2013

Manchester United will step up their search for an experienced goalkeeper to take over from David De Gea after the Spaniard’s error allowed Tottenham Hotspur to draw level in their recent Premier League meeting, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

David De Gea

The newspaper adds that concern over De Gea’s suitability for English football had grown before the fixture at White Hart Lane. The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has in the past struggled with the physical aspect of life in the Premier League but United held out hope that he would acclimatise to his surroundings.

However, the 22-year-old is not thought to have improved enough during his 18 months at Old Trafford and retains a weakness when dealing with crosses, while manager Sir Alex Ferguson does not have total faith in United’s other senior goalkeeper, Anders Lindegaard, either.

The uncertainty over the pair has led Ferguson to consider other options, including Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic and Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, the Telegraph reveals, while the decision of Barcelona stopper Victor Valdes not to renew his contract at Camp Nou, and the fallout between Real Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho and captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas, means the Spanish pair could also come under consideration.

De Gea moved to United from Atletico in 2011, ostensibly as a replacement for the retiring Edwin van der Sar. He has played 60 games for the Red Devils, and won the Europa League with Atleti in 2010.
