Newcastle move for Yanga-Mbiwa in doubt after medical no-show

Newcastle United’s proposed £7m signing of Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has been thrown into doubt after the France international failed to turn up for a medical with the Premier League club, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The inclement weather has been blamed for the delay but with the decision of Loic Remy to reject Newcastle in favour of Queens Park Rangers still fresh in the mind and reported interest from Arsenal in Yanga-Mbiwa, the Magpies could be forgiven for doubting the chances of the deal going through.

Newcastle have had their offer for the 23-year-old accepted but while Arsenal have not yet bid for the versatile player, reports in France claim they have been in contact with Montpellier regarding Yanga-Mbiwa.

Primarily a central defender but also capable of playing at full-back or in a defensive midfield role, if Yanga-Mbiwa’s move to Newcastle does go ahead he would join a growing French enclave at St. James’ Park.

The likes of Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa, Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan already call Newcastle home, while Alan Pardew has added Mathieu Debuchy to his squad already in the transfer window and could sign two further Frenchman, Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran, the Telegraph has claimed.
