Lambert unable to hide disappointment as Aston Villa fail in Capital One Cup

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert admitted he was devastated at losing out to League Two Bradford City in the Capital One Cup semi-final, with the Premier League side missing the chance to compete in a Wembley final against either Chelsea or Swansea City, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Villa trailed 3-1 from the first-leg and could not overturn the deficit at Villa Park, winning 2-1 on the night but losing 4-3 on aggregate. Goals from Christian Benteke and Andreas Weimann gave Villa hope but James Hanson’s strike for the Bantams left Villa with too much to do.
Lambert said: “I am absolutely gutted, disappointed, hurt, everything. Everyone is hurt. You will never have a better chance to get to a cup final throughout your whole career, even the young lads.”
The cup had the potential to provide some respite for Villa as they continue to struggle in the Premier League. The Midlands outfit are 17th, one place above the relegation zone, a single point ahead of 18th-place Reading.
Lambert vowed that the cup disappointment would not impact upon his side’s chances of survival in the league, urging his players to “come out fighting”, adding that the only other option was to “lie down and take it”.
