Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that new signings may be required if his team are to challenge for a top four Premier League finish, Sky Sports has reported.

The Gunners are struggling to finish in the Champions League spots this season, currently finding themselves in sixth place, 7 points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who are fourth. Arsenal suffered a 2-1 reverse against Chelsea at the weekend, and the north London club have only managed to record one win from their seven games against those teams currently above them in the table this season, the 5-2 win over Spurs in November.

Many pundits expected Wenger to dip into the transfer market during the January window to bolster his squad and Wenger admits that he may have to in order to maintain a competitive team. “If we have no injuries, we are all right. But if we have big injuries, we are a bit short,” Wenger said.

Arsenal are currently missing midfield regular Mikel Arteta through injury but last week they managed to secure Theo Walcott to a new three-year deal, and have also welcomed back long-term injury absentees Jack Wilshire and Aaron Ramsey.

Wenger has also admitted that he's been keeping an eye on West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame. He said: “I've seen him in games where he's had a big impact, for example against Chelsea [where West Ham won 3-1]. He has a great presence and can drive the midfield.

Diame has featured 17 times for the Hammers in the league this season, scoring twice, and the Senegalese midfielder has been linked with several clubs about a possible move away in the window. Arsenal play West Ham in their league clash at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
