Roberto Mancini has revealed his surprise at reports that Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain wants the Premier League champions to emulate Barcelona with a 4-3-3 system from next season, according to Sky Sports.

While admitting to being a fan of the Spanish giants, Mancini does not believe that adopting their style of play successfully will prove an easy task. He said: “I speak with Txiki every day and he never told me this. We have the same thoughts about football. I don't think it is more important to play 4-3-3, 4-4-2 or 4-1-5, it is more important to have good players.

Everyone wants to play like Barca, but Barca is one, like Real Madrid or AC Milan. It is impossible to play like Barca but I think that you can win also if you play a different style.

Mancini also claims that he and Begiristain, who enjoyed much success in his equivalent role while at the Catalan club, share many philosophies relating to football and do not clash with their ideas or ideals, adding: “We are agreed about everything because we think the same. About football we are the same, we don't have differences.

The manager says that this tactical decision is not something he has ever discussed with the 48-year-old, who played over 220 games for Barcelona in an eight-year playing spell at the Nou Camp.

Begiristain took the post at City in October, having left the same position at Barcelona in 2010, departing the club alongside former president Joan Laporta.
