Berbatov no Man Utd flop, insists Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has defended former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov from accusations the Bulgarian flopped during his time at Old Trafford, the Daily Mirror has reported, as Berbatov prepares to return to his old club with his current employers, Fulham, in the FA Cup.

Dimitar Berbatov

Berbatov is United’s record signing after Ferguson paid Tottenham Hotspur just over £30m for the player’s services in 2008. He was allowed to leave last summer after four years with United, moving to Craven Cottage for £5m having fallen down the pecking order at the Red Devils.

The Mirror suggests that Berbatov no longer fit the way in which Ferguson envisioned his team playing, the forward’s tendency to slow the game down to his pace contrasting with the high-speed style the manager was keen to implement.

Ferguson though was clear in his belief that Berbatov was a good signing for the club, who more than justified his expensive price tag. He said: “I don't think Dimitar was a failure here. I think he did a great job here.

The problem is, I had choices and at his age it's not easy to be part of those choices when he's not playing. He wanted regular first-team football and we gave him the opportunity to go to Fulham.

In his time with United, Berbatov scored 57 goals in 149 appearances, winning the Premier League and Community Shield twice and the League Cup and Club World Cup once. Since moving to Fulham, Berbatov has hit the net seven times in 20 games.
