Lambert defiant despite Aston Villa FA Cup exit
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has vowed to keep working hard to turn around his team’s form after the Premier League side suffered their second cup knockout at the hands of lower league opposition in a matter of days, Sky Sports has reported.
After League Two’s Bradford City dumped Villa out of the Capital One Cup at the semi-final stage, booking a place in the final, where they will meet Swansea City, it was Championship outfit Millwall’s turn to embarrass the Midlands side, putting them out of the FA Cup.
Villa took the lead midway through the first-half when Darren Bent was on target but were pegged back almost immediately, Dan Shittu scoring for the home side. The scores remained level for the rest of the match with a replay looking likely until John Marquis scored in the 89th minute to send the Londoners through to the next round.
Lambert however insisted that the result was an unfair one. He said: “I thought we dominated the game - the very least we should have got was a replay. We bossed it really, with the possession. It's individual errors that are costing us on set-pieces and the second goal was just a crossed ball and we should deal with that.”
The former Norwich City manager added: “I thought we showed grit. I thought we dominated the game and I never thought either team looked as if they were going to win it towards the end. It looked as if it was going to a replay.”
Lambert also insisted he had no intention of walking away from Villa Park, striking a defiant tone as he called on his team to recover from recent disappointments. “I'm not a quitter and I'll keep going. You take the knocks - but you have to come back stronger,” the former Scotland international said.
