Kompany injury overshadows Man City victory

Sunday 27 January 2013

Inspirational Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany has picked up a calf injury, and will miss the champions’ trip to QPR on Tuesday night, reports BBC Sport.

The Belgian international limped off after 33 minutes of his side’s scrappy 1-0 victory away at Stoke in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

The 26-year-old is also a major doubt for next Sunday’s Premier League visit of Liverpool.

After the game, the defender tweeted: “I hope I won’t be out for too long but the team seems to be (as) strong as ever.”

The injury will be another defensive setback to Roberto Mancini, who has Kolo Toure away with the Ivory Coast on African Nations Cup duty.

It leaves him with just Matija Nastasic and Joleon Lescott as the recognised central defenders available, although the likes of Gael Clichy, Javi Garcia and Jack Rodwell have filled in as emergency cover in the past.

Pablo Zabaleta took the 2011 FA Cup winners into the last 16, with his strike five minutes from time.
