Liverpool struggler Sebastian Coates will not be leaving the club to return to South America, reports Sky Sports.

Brazilian Serie A outfit Gremio have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old, who has struggled to make an impact since arriving at Anfield from Nacional in 2011, having made just five starts for the club in his 18 months on Merseyside.

It had been suggested that Gremio were preparing a £7m offer to give Coates an Anfield exit route, but the speculation has been scuppered by the club.

The centre-back played during Liverpool’s FA Cup clash with League One side Oldham Athletic on Sunday, but could not keep the Reds in the cup as they crashed out of the competition, losing 3-2.

Media reports following the game hinted that manager Brendan Rodgers could be ready to part with Coates, who has also won nine caps for his native Uruguay, and use the funds to help strengthen the squad elsewhere.

Gremio director Rui Costa, however, replied bluntly when questioned about the prospect of taking Coates to the Arena do Grêmio, simply stating: “You can forget that, just forget it.
