Jones wants place in Man Utd defence

Phil Jones has said he hopes his recent spell playing in midfield for Manchester United does not prevent a return to the centre of defence in the future, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Jones admits that he would prefer to play at centre-back but is just happy to be playing for the Premier League leaders, having also been used as a right-back at times. But having been selected in midfield against Tottenham Hotspur in United’s last league game, and entering a performance that caught the eye of manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Jones was back in the heart of defence for the FA Cup victory over Fulham.

The former Blackburn Rovers player joked that this versatility may be more of a curse than a blessing. He said: “Yes, I kind of shot myself in the foot a bit! I’ve said all along that centre-half is where I feel most comfortable. I understand and read the game better there. But wherever I am asked to play I will play there.

Ferguson described Jones’ midfield display as “absolutely brilliant”, the Mirror adds, but the Scot also claimed Jones is a more well-rounded player than Chelsea captain and former England centre-back John Terry, hinting that he sees Jones’ future as a defender, rather than a midfielder.

Jones continued: “I’m at Manchester United and I love playing for this club, so I’m happy to play anywhere. I didn’t have a great start to the season, but hopefully I can push my way into the side and get some games under my belt.
