Benitez has players' support, insists Chelsea defender Cahill
Gary Cahill believes Chelsea’s FA Cup comeback against Brentford is proof that interim manager Rafael Benitez has the support of the players, according to Sky Sports.
Chelsea twice had to come from behind against their League One hosts, Oscar and Fernando Torres cancelling out goals from Marcello Trotta and a Harry Forrester penalty, to earn a replay at Stamford Bridge to be played in mid-February.
The England international said: “The character we showed in the second half shows we're playing for the manager. He's under a lot of pressure from the fans, but we have grated out a result in horrible conditions.”
Cahill added that even though the conditions were not ideal for the Champions League holders, with the Griffin Park pitch not in the best condition, there was no excuse for the Premier League club to struggle against a side two divisions lower.
The former Bolton Wanderers player was particularly critical about Chelsea’s first-half performance, where Trotta was allowed to put the League One side in front at the break. “ The first half wasn't good. We could blame the pitch and that we couldn't see anything in the sunshine. But we shouldn't as we were really sloppy and off the pace,” Cahill said.
Chelsea are the defending FA Cup holders, having beaten Liverpool 2-1 in the final last year, goals from Ramires and Didier Drogba. Andy Carroll scored for the Merseyside outfit.
