Jermain Defoe has made a speedy return to fitness after injuring his pelvic muscle thanks to a treatment advocated by Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas, Sky Sports has reported.

The Spurs boss revealed that Defoe first complained of the injury last Friday, which meant Tottenham had to keep the England forward out of the following Sunday’s FA Cup match with Leeds United. Tottenham were beaten in Defoe’s absence, Villas-Boas having to use midfielder Clint Dempsey as a striker and later calling on youngster Jonathan Obika.

There were fears that Defoe could be sidelined for an extended period of time but he is expected to play a part in Tottenham’s Wednesday evening meeting with Norwich City at Carrow Road, Villas-Boas has revealed, after the 30-year-old underwent a procedure Villas-Boas brought to the club upon his appointment as Harry Redknapp’s successor last summer.

Defoe is believed to have had a plasma injection in the affected area, having had a series of scans to determine the location of the problem. Villas-Boas said: “In muscle injuries there is always a risk of it showing up again, but the medical department feel positive about it and the player is positive and he knows his body well. We believe a lot in growth factor treatment and plasma platelet treatments. It is a technique that we have been using since the beginning of the season.

It is not common but does happen from club to club. The player adhered to the treatment very, very well so we can move forward. The day he felt the injury was Friday and he had the injection thing. Now he is available for selection. That is the remarkable thing.
