Ferguson believes Man Utd have title-winning lead

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United are well-placed to regain the Premier League title from Manchester City thanks to the points lead they currently hold, the Daily Mirror has reported.

United go into their home game with Southampton four points clear of their near neighbours after City recorded a goalless draw with struggling Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday evening. If United beat the Saints they will end January seven points ahead of City.

Ferguson maintains that while United are certain to drop points between now and the end of the season, so will all of the other teams in and around the title mix, leaving the league leaders in the division’s driving seat.

Teams will drop points. Not just us. Manchester City will drop points - absolutely, it’s a certainty. Chelsea and Arsenal will drop points,” Ferguson said. “We’ll probably drop two or three ourselves, but the important thing is accepting the challenge that every game is just as difficult as the rest.

Last season saw United build up an eight-point lead over City at one point, only to see it whittled away by Roberto Mancini’s side to leave the teams level on points by the final game of the season. City held top spot by virtue of a better goal difference, clinching the title with Sergio Aguero’s famous last-gasp goal against Queens Park Rangers.
