Everton move for Fer in doubt

Everton’s proposed move for FC Twente’s Netherlands international midfielder Leroy Fer has been thrown into doubt after the Premier League club raised concerns over a knee injury that Fer has been troubled by in the past, BBC Sport has reported.

The Toffees are still said to be keen to sign the 23-year-old but want to renegotiate the terms of the transfer with Twente. Everton will still pay the reported £8.6m, the BBC adds, but want to stagger the deal so it is based on appearances or other clauses in case Fer suffers a recurrence of his knee injury.

Everton are said to have put a deadline of Wednesday evening on Twente agreeing to the changed deal. David Moyes’ side play West Bromwich Albion that night and Everton want to know where they stand by then to allow time for a deadline day alternative to be sought.

Fer missed two months of the season between September and November after he was injured while on international duty, but Twente have thus far refused to agree to the restructured offer.

Their chairman, Joop Munsterman, said: “Everton have additional requirements on the method of payment. Here we do not agree so it's stuck. We don't play that game here at Twente. They can come up with any demand they wish but we're not playing along with their demands.

Everton can go fourth in the Premier League if results work in their favour - they would have to beat West Brom and hope Tottenham Hotspur lose against Norwich City at Carrow Road, which would draw Everton level on points with Spurs and potentially take them above the London club on goal difference.
