Arsenal considering final offer for Barca striker Villa

Wednesday 30 January 2013

Arsene Wenger has met with the Arsenal hierarchy at the club’s training ground to discuss whether or not to launch a late move for Barcelona striker David Villa, the Daily Mail has reported.

The newspaper adds that Ivan Gazidis was at the London Colney facility to meet with the manager and lay out how a move for Villa would transpire, with time running out before the transfer window shuts late on Thursday evening.

Arsenal have thus far not made any signings in January, with Gazidis thought to have told Wenger that the transfers they were pursuing have broken down. There remains the chance that Arsenal will decide to stick with the squad they currently have for the rest of the season and then have a busy summer of recruitment, the Mail claims.

Speaking at his pre-match conference on Tuesday, ahead of Arsenal’s Wednesday fixture with Liverpool, Wenger said any interest he held in signing Villa was now over. However, Villa is said to be open to a move to the Emirates Stadium, and Villa is said to be Arsenal’s most realistic signing as the transfer window approaches its final day.

Arsenal are currently sixth in the table, a point behind Everton and four short of Tottenham Hotspur, who are fourth. A win over Liverpool could take Arsenal to fifth, if Everton lose at home to West Bromwich Albion, while Spurs face a trip to Norwich City.
