Arsenal ready to pounce for Monreal

By Simon Wright

Thursday 31 January 2013

Reports in Spain from AS newspaper suggest Arsenal are about to sign Spanish left back Nacho Monreal.

Nacho Monreal

The 26-year-old has become a regular fixture in the Spanish national team, having won nine caps under the management of Vicente del Bosque.

He currently plays for Malaga and has featured 14 times in La Liga this season. He scored his first goal of the campaign just last weekend against Real Mallorca.

A fee of around £10m is reported to have been agreed, and Monreal is travelling to London now to finalise the deal. If it goes through, he will link up with Santi Cazorla again in the club ranks at the Emirates.

Arsene Wenger has moved quickly after his first choice left back Kieran Gibbs sustained a thigh injury against Liverpool on Wednesday night, which has ruled him out for three weeks.

It left Andre Santos as the only recognised left back, and his performances in an Arsenal shirt have been questionable at best.

Monreal came through the youth academy at Osasuna.
