Lukas Podolski wants to see Arsenal hit the ground running in their next Premier League fixtures, warning that the Gunners’ tendency to start games slowly could cost them a place in the Champions League next season, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Wednesday was the sixth time in the last eight games they have fallen behind, Liverpool taking a two-goal lead through Luis Suarez and Jordan Henderson, putting daylight between themselves and their hosts after the hour mark.

But Arsenal hit back shortly after, goals from Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott levelling the scores a matter of minutes after Henderson doubled Liverpool’s lead, to leave Arsene Wenger’s side four points adrift of fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur.

Podolski said: “It is a problem. We must start strong from the first minute and score the first goal. In the last weeks that has always been the problem - we must fight and come back. Chelsea and Spurs are strong. It is a strong league and we must fight every game.

We want to finish first, but the difference is too big now. We lost a lot of points in the first half of the Premier League and now the difference is too big. We must fight for the Champions League places and this is our focus.

Arsenal were unable to take advantage of Chelsea’s draw with Reading and Tottenham’s draw with Norwich City, the Blues giving up a two-goal lead despite holding the advantage in injury time while Spurs came from a goal down to hold the Canaries to a draw at Carrow Road.
