Gareth Bale aspires to follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and become the best all round player in the world, according to ESPN.

Gareth Bale

The Welsh winger has enjoyed a flourishing reputation over the past couple of seasons, and is widely considered among the best players in the world in his position.

Fine performances for Tottenham have seen him linked with a move to the continent, with Barcelona and Ronaldo’s current home, Real Madrid, being two names most regularly mooted as future clubs of the former Southampton man.

Speaking to The Evening Standard, Bale said: “You put your targets high. The way Ronaldo plays, he's the best all-round player in the world. People have said things in the past and the stuff he does is similar to what I do.

"He is a benchmark for every player who wants to be that good and it's useful to look at other players, watch how they do things and take my game to another level. Look at the way he takes free-kicks - he scores a lot of goals from them.

He is obviously doing something right and he is on another level. Can I get there? One day. He's one of the players who we all try to match. Apart from Lionel Messi, Ronaldo is on a different planet and I'd love to be half as good as him.

Bale has won 38 caps for Wales, all of which he has earned since joining Spurs from Saints in 2007 for a fee of £7m. He has scored 31 goals in 133 appearances for the club to date, including 14 in 28 games for his club this season.
