Arsenal defender Gibbs facing six weeks out

Friday 01 February 2013

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs could be out of action for up to six weeks, reports Sky Sports.

Kieran Gibbs

The England international suffered a thigh strain during the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Liverpool midweek, but the original diagnosis predicted an absence of up to three weeks.

With the 23-year-old now facing twice as long as that on the sidelines, the news deals a major blow to Arsenal ahead of their Champions League last-16 clash with Bayern Munich, with both legs of the fixture falling during Gibbs’ absence.

Wenger confirmed this, by stating: “It will be four to six weeks (out). I believe Gibbs will be out for the Champions League.

Wenger claimed that the news played a big part in the deadline day signing of Spanish international Nacho Monreal, but the £8.5m man is unable to feature in Europe as he has already played in the competition this season with former club Malaga.

This means that Andre Santos is likely to feature as the North Londoners’ left-back during the next round of Champions League fixtures, with Monreal likely to make his Gunners' debut against Stoke at the Emirates on Saturday.
