Wigan v Southampton - Match preview and team news

Friday 01 February 2013

Wigan are looking to build on their impressive comeback at Stoke City in midweek and complete the double over Southampton after deservedly taking a 2-0 victory away from the South Coast earlier this season. Roberto Martinez’ men currently lie 18th in the Premier League table and will know that if the Latics are to perform their annual great escape then their form at the DW Stadium, where they have currently only won twice in the league this season, must improve.

Martinez may hand a second debut to Paul Scharner after the Austrian midfielder returned to the club until the end of the season. Elsewhere, the Latics are faced with a lengthy injury list that sees Emmerson Boyce doubtful with a hamstring injury while Ivan Ramis (knee), Riyo Miyaichi (ankle), Ben Watson (leg), Albert Crusta (knee) and Antolin Alcaraz (groin) all miss out. Arouna Kone, who scored against Southampton earlier this season, is still at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Southampton will take heart from their good performance at Old Trafford in the week despite succumbing to a Wayne Rooney brace and new boss Mauricio Pochettino will be increasingly confident that his squad of players, who currently lie three points clear of danger, are good enough to remain in the Premier League next season.

Jose Fonte and Guly Do Prado are still missing with knee injuries and they represent the Saints’ only two injury worries.
