Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Manchester United defender Phil Jones could miss the European Under-21 Championships if his knee injury flares up again between now and the end of the season, the Guardian has reported.

Jones has been named in Stuart Pearce’s Under-21 squad to play Sweden on Tuesday and England manager Roy Hodgson has already said he feels Jones should play for the Under-21s at the tournament in Israel this summer.

Ferguson, however, is less keen for his player to spend the summer on international duty after injury meant he did not play a game for his club until mid-November. A back injury ruled him out of the start of the season before a more serious knee problem extended his spell on the sidelines, the Guardian notes.

We'll have to wait and see how things are,” Ferguson said. “The boy's had an injury this season, which has needed looking after. We'll see what it's like in the summer.

Jones was part of the senior England side that travelled to Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012 last summer but did not make an appearance. For the Under-21 version of the tournament this summer, England have been drawn in Group A with the hosts, Israel, Norway and Italy.
