Gibbs' Arsenal place under threat after Monreal signing

Saturday 02 February 2013

Injured Kieran Gibbs could find himself out of the Arsenal side for longer than the expected eight weeks determined by his thigh injury after the Daily Mail reported that the Gunners’ deadline day signing, Malaga left-back Nacho Monreal, was bought to replace the England international.

Arsenal paid more than £8m for the Spain defender and it was assumed Monreal’s signing was to cover for Gibbs in the short-term and bulk out the squad in the long run. But the Mail claims manager Arsene Wenger sees Monreal as his eventual first-choice, with Gibbs to act as back-up to the 26-year-old.

Monreal is unavailable for this season’s Champions League, however, so if Gibbs is fit in time for the second leg of Arsenal’s upcoming meeting with Bayern Munich then he will return to the side. There appears little chance of Gibbs being ready for the first leg in mid-February, however, so Andre Santos could deputise. The second leg will be played in early March.
