We are not another Portsmouth, says QPR's Fernandes

Queens Park Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes has defended his January spending and played down the chances of the club becoming "another Portsmouth", according to the Sunday Telegraph.

Manager Harry Redknapp was allowed to bring in a number of players in the winter transfer window, including Loic Remy from Marseille for £7million and Christopher Samba from Anji Makhachkala for £12.5million.

Such extravagant spending has sparked fears that Queens Park Rangers could mirror the situation of Portsmouth, who experienced financial meltdown after being relegated from the Premier League, if the club suffer the drop into the Championship.

But Fernandes has played down those worries. He said: "If you analyse it we haven’t spent that much money on transfers and as for our wage bill, when I look at other clubs when they put their results out then ours is not too bad and there is now value in the squad."

"You try to minimise the risk as much as possible and that’s where the expertise of the management comes in and they say 'this is what we need to survive’ and you look at it and if it makes sense then the board and myself support it."

QPR, who are currently rock bottom of the Premier League, are six points from safety, and continue their quest for survival with a trip to Swansea City next weekend.
