Jones doubtful for Man Utd Champions League match with Real Madrid

England defender Phil Jones could miss part of Manchester United’s Champions League double-header with Real Madrid after being diagnosed with shingles, Sky Sports has reported.

Jones did not feature in United’s weekend win over Fulham in the Premier League and has withdrawn from the England Under-21 squad to play Sweden on Tuesday evening. United play La Liga champions Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu next week.

Shingles is an illness similar to chicken pox, Sky Sports adds, and usually lasts for around two weeks, which would mean Jones missing the trip to Spain as well as United’s weekend Premier League game against Everton.

Jones has made only 12 United appearances this season in a campaign already disrupted by injury. He moved to the club in 2011 after beginning his career at North West neighbours Blackburn Rovers.

The return leg between United and Madrid is due to be played at Old Trafford on March 5, and will see former United winger Cristiano Ronaldo return to the ground at which he played for six years, between 2003 and 2009 before he departed for the nine-time European Cup winners in a world record transfer.
