Liverpool goalkeeper Reina rejects criticism of his performances

Pepe Reina does not believe he is having a poor season despite receiving criticism for some of his Liverpool displays, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Pepe Reina

Reina spoke with the Spanish media before Liverpool’s draw with Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday, in which he conceded an equalising goal shortly after Liverpool had taken the lead for a second time through captain Steven Gerrard.

Sergio Aguero put City level from an acute angle after Reina left his goal to close down the Argentine forward, only for Aguero to loft the ball back towards the empty goal and help City take a point from the match.

If Liverpool had held onto their lead against City they would now be only three points behind Arsenal in seventh rather than the five-point gap that currently stands. Reina however feels that barring a brief spell at the start of the year, he has been in acceptable form despite suffering from problems with injuries.

He said: “Some people say I've had a bad season, but honestly I think I only had three poor matches, at the beginning of the year. It's been a strange season for me because I've missed lots of games with injury. This has been the most unsettled season, both personally and as a team, since I joined the club.

Liverpool is going through a transitional period, with new ideas and a different playing philosophy. That takes time. People have to be patient. It's normal for us to be erratic.
