A teenager was arrested on Monday night when Wycombe Wanderers goalkeeper Jordan Archer was attacked by a Gillingham supporter.

It has been confirmed by ESPN that the individual in question has been arrested by Kent police.

Kent police said on Tuesday morning: “A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and is currently in custody following an incident in the 93rd minute of the Gillingham v Wycombe match last night.

Wycombe were leading 1-0 through a late goal from Matt McClure, and were playing out time against Martin Allen’s men when the unsavoury incident occurred.

Archer, who is on loan to the Chairboys from Tottenham, was wasting time and got booked by the referee when the supporter ran onto the pitch at the Priestfield Stadium and pushed the 19-year-old over.

Stewards quickly got onto the field to drag him away from the field of play. It overshadowed a fine victory for Wycombe which takes them into mid-table and closer to the play-offs than the drop zone, while Gillingham missed their chance to go back to the top of the table.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth told Sky Sports afterwards: “I don’t want to comment too much, but everyone is okay in there. Jordan is a tough lad.

In October, Leeds fan Aaron Cawley was jailed for 16 weeks after he attacked Sheffield Wednesday’s Chris Kirkland during a Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough.
