Fulham face punishment over floodlight failure

Fulham could face punishment over the floodlight failure at Craven Cottage that halted Saturday evening’s Premier League clash with Manchester United, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Craven Cottage

The lights went out four minutes before half-time, as the Red Devils prepared to take a corner. The players had to leave the field for seven minutes until the problem was resolved. Once the lights came on, the visitors went on to record a crucial 1-0 victory thanks to Wayne Rooney’s effort in the 78th minute.

The Premier League has confirmed that they are writing to the Cottagers to ask for an explanation into what happened. The west Londoners are holding their own investigation into the matter.

A spokeswoman for the mid-table side said: “We are conducting our own internal investigation to ensure that any questions that need answering can be answered.

I’m sure that when the Premier League come and ask for our representations, we will be able to give them wholeheartedly.

A punishment is unlikely if the club can prove that the failure was caused by circumstances beyond their control. If not, the Premier League has the power to hand out a range of penalties, with the most likely being a hefty fine for Fulham.

Floodlight failures caused three matches to be abandoned in the 1997-98 Premier League season.
