Manchester City will be able to boost the defence of their Premier League title by having both Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure return to the team against Southampton, the Manchester Evening News has reported.

Vincent Kompany

Toure will return to club duty after representing Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Kompany stands a chance of returning from injury against the Saints, although the captain is not guaranteed to be available for Roberto Mancini.

After Ivory Coast were knocked out of the Africa Nations at the quarter-final stage by Nigeria, Yaya Toure and his brother Kolo will both be in contention to play against the Saints - Kolo Toure is an option in defence in Kompany is not fit in time since the manager has doubts about the pairing of Joleon Lescott and Matija Nastasic.

Kompany was originally ruled out of action until February 24, when City play Chelsea, but has made better than expected progress with his calf injury that forced him to leave City’s FA Cup win at Stoke City early.

City are currently nine points behind Manchester United in the Premier League with the Manchester derby at Old Trafford still to come later in the season.
