Jovetic passes Villa on Wenger's wish list

Arsene Wenger could make the Arsenal's signing of David Villa less of a priority during the summer transfer window and is now reportedly keeping tabs on younger players, as he sets more of an eye on the long-term future, reports the Daily Mirror.

Stevan Jovetic

The player in question, Stevan Jovetic, is eight years Villa’s junior at 23, and has already won 21 caps for his native Montenegro. With the Spanish international having appeared keen but failing to arrive in North London, Wenger is now upping his interest in Jovetic, who has been on the Frenchman’s radar for some time.

He was mooted as a potential signing during the winter transfer window, but Wenger’s eager pursuit of Villa dampened any chances of Jovetic being brought in. However, with the Gunners planning a strong summer rebuild, they will reportedly have money available for squad strengthening purposes.

While the signing of Villa still remains a possibility, Jovetic is thought to be at the top of the club’s wishlist this summer.

Wenger will be in search for a goalkeeper, a defender, a holding midfielder and will also hope to land Jovetic. Other players being linked with a switch to the Emirates include Etienne Capoue of Toulouse, Nicolas N'koulou of Marseille and Pepe Reina, who plays for Premier League rivals Liverpool.

With players such as Sebastien Squillaci and Andrey Arshavin looking set to leave the club when their contracts expire this summer, there is likely to be room on Wenger’s wage bill.
