Former Everton winger Andy van der Meyde reportedly warned Royston Drenthe against joining the Toffees due to the temptations afforded to “guys like them” in Liverpool, reports the Daily Mirror.

Royston Drenthe

Dutch news site HP De Tijd has revealed a voicemail sent by the former Netherlands international to compatriot Drenthe ahead of the latter’s loan move to Goodison Park in 2011.

Van der Meyde said: “Royston, I hear that you are on your way to Everton. Don’t do it boy, I beg you, don’t do it. Liverpool has too many temptations for guys like us. Before you know it you will be dragged into the nightclubs.

There Bacardi flows and you can ski on cocaine; and the women, Royston. Oh man, oh man, oh man. Those British women with their short skirts…

Van der Meyde, who made only 20 appearances for the Toffees in four turbulent years in the North West, struggled with drug and alcohol related problems during his stay.

Drenthe still moved to Everton shortly after the message, but lasted only 11 months on Merseyside before his loan deal ended. He joined Russian Premier League outfit FC Alania Vladikavkaz last week.

Before the move, however, van der Meyde was also believed to have gone and spent a few nights in the town of Vladikavkaz, where he reported back his findings to Drenthe: “Nothing to do. Ugly women. The coast is clear.

Van der Meyde has since retired from football, finishing his career at Topklasse club WKE.
