Chelsea v Wigan - Match preview and team news

Saturday 09 February 2013

Chelsea are desperate for both a win and a performance to reduce the pressure on under-fire interim boss Rafa Benitez. The Blues are without a win since defeating Arsenal on the 20th of January and have also conceded at least two goals in each of their last three games to League 1 outfit Brentford, Reading and in defeat at Newcastle last week.

Stamford Bridge

The European champions are without captain John Terry who is still suffering from the knee injury which sidelined him earlier this season, while Petr Cech is a major doubt with a broken finger. Elsewhere, Eden Hazard has now completed his three-match suspension and should come back into the starting XI while Demba Ba, who will wear a protective mask after suffering a broken nose against Newcastle last week, could be played alongside Fernando Torres.

Wigan have Arouna Kone back from the Africa Cup of Nations and the Ivorian could come straight back into the starting XI after failing to break into his national side in South Africa. The Latics have the longest injury list in the Premier League, with Emmerson Boyce doubtful with a hamstring injury while Ryo Miyaichi (ankle), Ben Watson (leg), Albert Crusat (knee), Antolin Alcaraz (groin) and Ivan Ramis (knee) remain absent. Captain Gary Caldwell may miss out with a hip problem as Roberto Martinez’s men continue their fight for survival.
