Barcelona defender Gerard Pique says he'll be rooting for Manchester United when they take on Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, according to the Daily Mail.

Pique started his career at the Nou Camp but spent four years at United before returning to the Spanish giants in 2008.

And the 26-year-old is hoping that Sir Alex Ferguson's side can see off Barcelona's fierce rivals over the two-legged last sixteen match and advance to the quarter-finals.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, the Spanish international said: "I'd like United to go through because of my history. I spoke to [Rio] Ferdinand and the team's in great shape."

The defender, who has won Europe's top prize on two occasions at Barcelona, played just 12 times for the Red Devils before moving to the Catalan side for a fee of around £5million.

Barcelona and Pique will be in Champions League action themselves next week when they travel to Milan in an attempt to reach the last eight of the competition.
