Solskjaer reveals Man Utd management dream as Schmeichel warns against Mourinho approach

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed he dreams of succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager, while another of the veterans of the club’s 1999 Champions League win, Peter Schmeichel, has warned against targeting Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho to replace the long-serving Scot, according to the Daily Mail.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

United play Madrid in the last 16 of this year’s Champions League, with the first-leg taking place in Spain on Wednesday, and Mourinho, who was at Old Trafford to watch United beat Everton on Sunday and go 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, has been widely discussed as a leading contender to replace Ferguson when he does decide to step down.

But while Schmeichel was full of praise for Mourinho as a manager, he added that the extra baggage the former Chelsea boss tends to bring with him - most notably a penchant for controversial statements and actions - would not be fitting for a United manager.

Schmeichel said: “He will not be the successor. I don't think the club would be happy with everything Mourinho brings with him. He's a great candidate for his qualities as a manager but the club doesn't want all the things that come with him.

Solskjaer, meanwhile, has spoken of his ambition to one day succeed his mentor Ferguson. The former striker is currently the manager of Molde in Norway and began his coaching career under Ferguson as the manager of United’s reserve team once his playing days came to an end.

While Solskjaer acknowledged it was a leap to go straight from Molde to Manchester, he still hoped it could happen. “Maybe it sounds stupid but my dream is to manage United. But I am not saying it is going to happen,” Solskjaer said.

I worked with Alex Ferguson for 15 seasons as a player and then as reserve team coach. His methodology has influenced my philosophy. Almost everything I know I learnt from Sir Alex.

Both of us believe in ourselves, we always want to win and we put our faith in youngsters and work hard.
