Chelsea captain John Terry has told his teammates that to salvage any success from a turbulent season, they must win the Europa League, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Blues went from Champions League winners at the end of last season to Champions League also-rans at the end of the group stage of this year’s competition, becoming the first holders to fail to get past the first round of the tournament after being eliminated from a group containing Juventus, Shakhtar Donetsk and Nordsjaelland.

Chelsea have also suffered domestically, falling off the pace at the top of the table and facing a battle to hold on to their third-place spot in the Premier League, while being knocked out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage by Swansea City and facing a replay against League One side and local rivals Brentford in the FA Cup. To top it off, there have been regular and vocal signs of unhappiness directed at interim manager Rafael Benitez, who replaced the popular Roberto Di Matteo in November.

Terry, who returned to training on Tuesday following a knee problem, said: “We're now in the Europa League and there is one message - we have to go and win it. It's as simple as that.

We have to make sure that we're switched on in European weeks because games will be coming on Thursdays and Sundays, which is a different situation for us.
