Man Utd have point to prove against Real Madrid, says Vidic

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has said the Premier League leaders have a point to prove in the Champions League when they meet Real Madrid on Wednesday, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Nemanja Vidic

United have never won at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu in the European Cup or Champions League, the newspaper adds, but Vidic was more referring to erasing the memory United’s performance in the competition last season, when the multi-time winners were knocked out a the group stage.

A year ago United faced a group containing Benfica, Basel and Otelul Gulati, with the former two clubs reaching the next round and United finishing above only Otelul, the Romanian side. For Vidic personally the Basel match, which sealed United’s fate, is a particularly painful memory as the Serbian suffered a season-ending knee injury in Switzerland.

Vidic, speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, said: “We have a lot of things to prove. Last season, we were too confident in the group stage. We lost some points but we thought we were going to go through. The boss made it clear last season wasn't good enough. But we know that ourselves.

You have to have a winning mentality if you play for Manchester United. When you have a season without trophies like last year it makes you realise that you have to improve. You have to learn from your mistakes. The approach this year has been different in the Champions League.

The centre-back added that responsibility for defending against Madrid’s attacking threats - not least former United winger Cristiano Ronaldo - was a responsibility that fell on the entire team, not just the defensive players.
