Van Persie and Welbeck rues missed chances as Man Utd draw with Real Madrid

Manchester United strikers Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck have admitted the Premier League club could have gone to Real Madrid in their Champions League tie and left with more than a 1-1, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Welbeck opened the scoring after 20 minutes by converting a Wayne Rooney corner but United were pulled back before half-time when Cristiano Ronaldo leapt above Patrice Evra to meet an Angel di Maria cross with a powerful header that David De Gea was unable to keep out.

Both sides had further chances in the contest but with De Gea in sparkling form Madrid were largely kept at bay, while at the other end both Welbeck and van Persie had opportunities to give United a second away goal.

Despite Sir Alex Ferguson revealing he was happy with the scoreline, Welbeck and van Persie were in agreement that United had the chances to take a first-leg lead back to Old Trafford.

I knew where Wayne was going to put it and thankfully I put it into the back of the net,” Welbeck said. “But I was close to a second. It was a great ball from Robin and I just couldn’t stick it in the back of the net,” he continued. Van Persie added: “We had a couple of good chances…There were chances on both sides and it was a great game. I had a great chance in the second-half when I hit the bar. I should have scored that.
