Villas-Boas grateful Dawson stayed at Tottenham

Thursday 14 February 2013

Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas has admitted he is grateful captain Michael Dawson did not leave the club in the summer transfer window, ESPN has reported.

Michael Dawson

Dawson appeared to be on the verge of leaving White Hart Lane shortly after Villas-Boas’ arrival when the England international was told he was not guaranteed first team football under the Portuguese.

Villas-Boas said at the time he wanted four central defenders in his squad rather than the five he inherited but revealed this week that he eventually relented on the number of centre-backs to hand because of injury concerns around Younes Kaboul. That paved the way for Dawson to remain at Tottenham, despite strong interest from London rivals Queens Park Rangers.

The former Chelsea manager was asked ahead of Spurs’ Europa League tie with Lyon if he is thankful Dawson was still at the club, and Villas-Boas conceded he was, although added that he does not expect to start next season with five central defenders.

He said: “Yes, I think we appreciate the fact we were able to hang on to him…We are grateful, in the end. We ended up being on the better side by the fact he agreed to stay with us. We were lucky in that sense. We won't start another season with five [central defenders].
