Henry defends Wenger from Arsenal criticism

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has spoken out in defence of Gunners manager Arsene Wenger and the criticism the boss has received at times this season, ESPN has reported.

Henry hit out at the short-term culture that has led to Wenger coming under fire as Arsenal continue on a trophy drought that now stretches back eight years, to the FA Cup in 2005 when Arsenal won the competition by beating Manchester United on penalties.

Arsenal are still in this year’s FA Cup and face Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the fifth round this weekend, but were knocked out of the League Cup by League Two side Bradford City and have not been competitive in the Premier League title race, falling 21 points behind leaders Manchester United and struggling to make the top four to reach next season’s Champions League.

Bayern Munich are Arsenal’s next opposition in this season’s Champions League, with the first-leg of their last 16 fixture to be played at the Emirates Stadium next week. Henry, however, has called on Wenger’s critics to consider the wider picture and remember what the long-serving manager has done for the club in his full tenure.

When you don't win, people are always going to question your work, your legacy and what you did before, Henry said. “ It is difficult to hear this criticism, difficult to see, but for me the boss will always be Arsene. He's always great for me and I know what he has done for the club.

Henry continued: “ You are always going to get judged on your last performance or what you are doing at the moment, but it is kind of hard to criticise Arsene Wenger, knowing how he has changed the club and how the team is playing right now compared to how the team was playing before.
