Ryan Giggs believes it is crucial that Manchester United scored an away goal in their Champions League meeting with Real Madrid on Wednesday, giving the Premier League side a slight advantage ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford, Sky Sports has reported.

Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for United after 20 minutes by converting a Wayne Rooney corner and, although former United winger Cristiano Ronaldo levelled for Madrid before half-time, United maintained parity for the rest of the match, giving them a foothold when the Spanish side travel to Manchester in early March.

Giggs came off the bench in the second-half to make his 150th appearance for United in European football and lavished praise upon his goal scoring teammate Welbeck. Giggs said: “ He was brilliant all night, Danny. He was causing them all sorts of problems. He deserved the goal.

The Welsh midfielder added: “There's plenty of positives. It's obviously a good result. We scored the goal - which is always important, getting that away goal - and we defended really well, so we're relatively happy.

The team that we picked, we had goals in us, and that's what we tried to do, score goals and create chances.

Giggs maintained his record of scoring in every season of the Premier League by netting his first goal of the season last weekend against Everton, helping United to a 2-0 victory that saw them capitalise on the defeat suffered by champions Manchester City at Southampton a day earlier and open up a 12-point lead at the top of the table.
