Pardew angry after Newcastle have two goals disallowed in Europa League draw
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has criticised the officials who took charge of the Premier League side’s Europa League draw with Metalist Kharkiv on Thursday after the Magpies saw two goals disallowed for offside, the Daily Mail has reported.
Papiss Cisse was the player punished both times but Pardew insisted he was level with the last defender at the time the ball was played, and therefore onside. He said: “ Fundamentally they (the officials) have got them wrong, in a tight game like that. In these games they are the margins. I can understand if they get it wrong once but twice is hard to take.
“The law says it should favour the striker. Both decisions were level - I wouldn't even say that they needed to favour the striker. It's hard to take.”
The match ended goalless and Pardew added that despite his annoyance at seeing what he felt were legitimate goals rejected, he believes Newcastle are well-placed to progress after the return leg in Ukraine, while midfielder Yohan Cabaye was equally positive since they avoided conceding an away goal.
The goalless draw however means that Newcastle’s long run of scoring at home in European ties has come to an end. Previously, the North East side had netted in their last 14 home fixtures in continental competition, dating back to 2004.
