Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Andre Villas-Boas has said winger Gareth Bale is his club’s version of Cristiano Ronaldo after the Wales international produced two moments of match-winning quality in the Europa League victory over Lyon, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Villas-Boas compared Bale’s spectacular pair of free-kicks that gave Spurs a 2-1 win over the Ligue 1 side to Ronaldo’s goal for Real Madrid against Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Portuguese was asked if he would swap Bale for Ronaldo, and replied: “ ]I have one in my team already. When Gareth steps up to take a free-kick, you never know what is going to happen.

We saw a great game on Tuesday [when Real drew with Manchester United] decided on a moment of magic from Ronaldo,” Villas-Boas said, adding: “ Players of this dimension step up to help the team reach their objectives.

The goals were Bale’s 20th and 21st of the season and third and fourth in his last two games, having also bagged a brace in Tottenham’s last league fixture against Newcastle United - scoring another free-kick in opening the scoring against the Magpies.

Tottenham now take a slender lead to Lyon, with the sides playing the return leg in France on February 21. The winners of the tie play either Inter or Romanian outfit Cluj, with the Italians leading 2-0 from the first-leg.
