Arsenal mull over Valdes swoop

Sunday 17 February 2013

Arsenal are set to make a shock summer move for Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, according to The Sun.

Arsene Wenger

Valdes' contract ends in July 2014 but the Catalan giants are willing to let the Spanish international leave a year early, as long as any potential suitors can match the £10million price tag slapped on his forehead.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is an admirer and may look to Valdes to resolve his goalkeeping issues, with Wojciech Szczesny failing to convince the Frenchman that he is Arsenal's long-term number one stopper.

One stumbling block to any move for 31-year-old Valdes would be his wages. Reportedly earning £120,000-a-week in Spain, the thrifty north London club would be unwilling to match his current pay packet, meaning Valdes would need to take a cut to his wages.

Arsenal have struggled to decide on a permanent successor to Jens Lehmann since the German goalkeeper left in 2008.
