Liverpool v Swansea - Match preview and team news

By Adam Mazrani

Sunday 17 February 2013

Brendan Rodgers awaits the visit of his former club in the knowledge that Michael Laudrup’s ever-improving Swansea side currently lie above them in the league table. The Merseysiders had shown signs of improvement after impressing in 2-2 draws at both Arsenal and Manchester City, though Rodgers’ men have been brought back to earth this week after two demoralising 2-0 defeats, first at home to West Brom in the Premier League before falling at Zenit St. Petersburg to seemingly extinguish their Europa League campaign.

Rodgers has already all-but-ruled out a fight for the fourth Champions League spot this season though he will still want to ensure he finishes higher than the Swans, who he led to the Premier League.

The Northern Irishman will at least have Daniel Sturridge available again after the striker missed the club’s recent two defeats through a combination of injury and ineligibility. New signing Philippe Coutinho could also be handed a full debut in attack alongside Sturridge and Luis Suarez while Daniel Agger is expected to return at the heart of the defence alongside the retiring Jamie Carragher.

Swansea will surely have more than one eye on next week’s Capital One Cup final with Bradford City and thus manager Laudrup has various selection dilemmas to make. Does he select Michu, who returned to goalscoring form with a brace in Swansea’s 4-1 victory over QPR last week? Who out of Pablo Hernandez, Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge does he choose for the wider roles?

Chico Flores will almost certainly miss out however with ankle ligament damage, meaning either Kyle Bartley or Garry Monk will come in to the backline alongside captain Ashley Williams.
