David Luiz apologises after rash challenge
Chelsea defender David Luiz has apologised for his challenge on Brentford's Jake Reeves in their FA Cup 4th round replay on Sunday, The Guardian has reported.
Chelsea cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory against the League One outfit, with all four goals coming in the second half. However, the game was marred by two challenges; one by Gary Cahill in the first half, and Luiz's collision with Reeves, that saw the Brentford player leave the pitch with concussion. Whilst referee Neil Swarbrick chose to only show a yellow card to the Brazilian, many pundits who saw the replay suggest a red card was warranted for the reckless challenge.
Brentford manager Uwe Rosler stated that Luiz visited to the Brentford changing room after the match to apologise to Reeves, something Rosler stated was a "fantastic gesture". He continued to say, "Jake is fine, he wanted to continue but our medical staff said it was better that he didn't." He also stated that "I have not seen the situation clearly enough to make statement now but the player [Luiz] came into our dressing-room and he spoke to Jake, which is a fantastic gesture. He apologised."
Rosler also stated that he had no issues with the referee's performance, except for a first half incident that saw Swarbrick give Brentford a free kick, when allowing advantage to be played may have seen them have a shot on target. "On a better day, he could have waited a few seconds and we could have been 1-0 up, which is what you need when you are massive underdogs." Rosler also had "no complaints" about his decision with Cahill's challenge in the first half.
Chelsea will now face Middlesborough in the 5th round clash, where the winner will meet the winner of Manchester United v Reading.
