Ferguson calls for Nani to force his way into Man Utd team

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson wants winger Luis Nani to give him a selection headache and maintain the form that saw him named man of the match in the FA Cup win over Reading, ESPN has reported.

Nani came off the bench during the match and helped turn the tide in United’s favour. The game was goalless when the Portugal international entered the fray but he scored one and created another as United ran out 2-1 winners, Reading netting a late consolation.

The victory sets up a quarter-final meeting with either Chelsea or Middlesbrough, who play their fourth round fixture next Wednesday.

Nani was brought on against Reading shortly before half-time, replacing the injured Phil Jones, and Ferguson has revealed he thought Nani might prove the match-winner. He said: “ He's got great talent and I had a feeling he would win the game for us. You could see he was right on form and he had two great strikes straight away and he was a threat to them the whole night.

I think he deserved that. His contribution was terrific. When he came on he had some great strikes. He hit the post, one the goalkeeper saved. In the second half, he scored the opening goal.

Nani has featured on an infrequent basis for United this season, failing to start against Reading despite Ferguson drastically altering the line-up from the one that played Real Madrid in the Champions League a week prior.

Ferguson however indicated there was a way back into regular contention for Nani, if he offered the kind of consistency needed to produce performances such as this on a regular basis. “If he keeps that form up it makes my job even more difficult,” Ferguson said.
