Paulo Di Canio will be considered as a replacement for Sam Allardyce should the current West Ham manager not be offered a new contract, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Paulo Di Canio

Di Canio left Swindon Town on Monday evening, having previously announced his intention to resign almost a week earlier. The former Hammers forward remained at the club until the outcome of a proposed takeover was known but when the deal was not completed by the 5pm deadline he had set, he walked away from the League One club.

Allardyce’s contract at Upton Park is due to expire this summer and despite taking West Ham from the Championship to almost the top half of the Premier League in his 18 months in charge so far, it is not considered certain that Allardyce will be offered a new deal.

Di Canio, who guided Swindon to promotion from League Two in his first season in charge, played for West Ham between 1999 and 2003 after a controversial time at Sheffield Wednesday, where he was given a lengthy ban for pushing a referee.

His spell with West Ham saw Di Canio score 52 goals in 141 games. He also played for Charlton and Celtic, as well as Lazio, Milan, Juventus and Napoli in his homeland.
