Arsenal are in talks with Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta, according to the player's agent, says Sky Sports.

Fernando Amorebieta challenges Radamel Falcao

The 27-year-old centre back is out of contract at the Primera Liga club in the summer and is set to leave after failing to agree terms on a new deal with the Basque side. Amorebieta, a Venezuela international, has attracted interest from Russian big spenders Anzhi Makhachkala, but is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League.

Gines Carvajal, the defender's agent said: "We have had some contact with Anzhi, they were ready to make a good offer, but my client wants to play in England so the transfer to Russia was not possible. We are in talks with Arsenal, he could join them in June."

Amorebieta has spent his entire career at San Mames, representing Athletic on more than 250 occasions and was a member of the Spain Under-19 squad which won the European Championships in 2004.
