Premier League hopes to introduce goal-line technology next season

Thursday 21 February 2013

The Premier League wants to have goal-line technology in place by the start of next season after it was confirmed by FIFA that the 2013 Confederations Cup, held in Brazil a year before the World Cup takes place, will be the first time goal-line technology is used in more than a trial, Sky Sports has reported.

Goal-line technology being tested in Japan in December

A year ago the Premier League met with the two leading goal-line technology providers, Hawk-Eye and GoalRef, with plans put in place then to introduce GLT in the top flight. GLT was tested in Japan at the Club World Cup in December - which saw Corinthians beat Chelsea in the final of the competition - and the tests were deemed successful.

Hawk-Eye and GoalRef are the only two licensed GLT companies and will have to compete in a tendering process to provide the Premier League with their services, and no firm date can be put on the introduction of the winning system until the process has been completed.

However, a Premier League statement indicated the governing body’s desire to have a system in place by next season. It said: “The Premier League has been a long-term advocate for goal-line technology. We have held discussions with FIFA licensed providers with a view to introducing it as soon as is practically possible.
